FOREST PANCHKHHAL

COMMUNITY FOREST PANCHKHHAL - NEPAL

Panchkhhal - is located 41km from Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, at an altitude of 880 meter above sea level. The community forest (a forest managed and maintained by the local community) on site mainly constitute of a monoculture vegetation with a non native plant specie that significantly contributes to soil degradation, biodiversity loss with no/limited income generation opportunities for the community.

The forest currently consist mostly of Australian pine trees which has a negative impact on the quality of the soil, preventing other vegetation to grow, decreases biodiversity and land resilience. Some local experts refer to these forests as "plastic forest" due to the absence of other vegetation and decreasing biodiversity. Together with the local community, the Green Intelligence is working to find solutions to increase soil quality and water absorption, implementation of new vegetation and protection/maintenance of these forest. The end goal of this project is to increase forest resilience and generate more income for the local community.
